| Description | Egypt, US & Israel have signed the long debated QIZ – Qualified Industrial Zones agreement in Cairo. Agreement provides for the establishing of 7 qualified industrial zones in Greater Cairo, Alexandria & El Canal Zone, which exports to the US would be exempted from duties and quota limitations should they adapt to a minimum of 35 % Egyptian component & 11.7 % maximum Israeli component. Inputs of US manufacture may well be used; yet they should not exceed 15 % of the commodity value. Agreement would benefit the textile industry, the leather industry, furniture, chemicals, construction materials & processed food. Agreement could be extended later on to additional zones in the Delta. Egypt predicts the agreement to generate up to 100,000 employment opportunities and drive annual textile & garments exports to $ 4 billion by 2007. |
