| Description | Unnamed public officials quoted in the media have called for the liberalization of the electricity prices. They revealed that state owned electricity companies involved with generation, transmission, transformation & distribution have incurred during the FY 2003/2004 some L.E. 900 million losses (about $ 144 million). Figure compares with L.E. 550 million losses incurred in FY 2002/2003. They indicated that electricity prices have been fixed since 1992. [To which extent the issue would be affordable particularly after the recent increases of potable water prices that remain to be seen]. Sources have further indicated that electricity subsidies reached L.E. 3.6 billion in 2003/2004. |
