Egypt Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Nazif has recently met a delegation of an Egyptian/ Moroccan/ European Group promoting a fish wealth development project under L.E. 100 million initial estimated investments. Scheme targets to produce annually 200,000 tons of fish and to generate 700 direct employment opportunities apart from further 3,000 indirect opportunities while operating up to 25 modern fishing vessels. Fleet would operate to the south of the Red Sea and at the Extension of the Indian Ocean. N.B. Months earlier [May 11, 2005] Chairman of the General Authority for Fish Wealth Development announced a strategy has been drawn to increase annual fish production to 1.5 million tons by 2017 up from 876,000 tons at present. Boosting fish wealth development would motivate several other feeder & complimenting industries including vessels building and equipping, ice producing factories & equipment, fish waste recycling among others. Egypt frozen fish imports at present are put at 165,000 tons. |
