A consortium grouping Orascom Construction Industry SAE & Flsmidth of Denmark was declared winner of a $ 250 million contract to build a 2.5 million tons/ year cement mill in Nigeria. Client is Cement United Co. Project is scheduled for completion in 26 months. Total estimated project costs are put at $ 330 million, 60 % of which backed by loans from several international banks. Media reports have revealed that annual cement consumption in Nigeria is put at 10 million tons, with local production covering hardly one third of the figure. Worth indicating is that ECC – Egyptian Cement Co., affiliated to Orascom Group, owns 70 % of Cement United Co. of Nigeria with the remaining 30 % owned by Nigeria Flour Mills. The later (Nigeria Flour Mills) is the largest cement importer in the country and has imported in 2004 almost 7 million tons of cement, now sold in the country at $ 120 per ton. |
